Our First Little Miracle

Being pregnant with our first child was one of the happiest times of my life. I was sick as a dog the first 5 months. I slept 12 hours a day for the last 4 months!

The pregnancy was not completely uneventful, though.

After Aaron's car accident, we got a Mom-mobile: a Grand Caravan. I loved my "new" car! We'd had it for a few weeks and were driving through neighborhoods looking at houses. I'd slowed to take a turn; turned left and Wham! We were struck by a car, trying to pass us on the left- in a neighborhood! The driver was going about 35. The impact broke the front drivers-side tire rod and sent the front headlight down about 3 houses! The front bumper was just hanging on. We rode home in the policeman's car as the van was towed to the shop. I called my OB first thing in the morning to be sure nothing had happened to the baby. We heard his heartbeat, and knew he was ok.

Later in my pregnancy, the baby quit moving around at one point, for about 24 hours. We called the OB and then went to the emergency room. He was distressed because I had an infection. But some fluids and medicine and we were both back on track.

I started dilating at 36 weeks. Had Braxton-Hicks contractions, but being a first-time Mom, I didn't know the difference. I took it easy for 2 weeks until I was full-term. When we went in for my 38-week appointment, I was 5 cm! At this point, Aaron was still not driving due to the epilepsy. His work was across town. Whenever my "time" came, it would probably come quickly. Given the circumstances, we decided to induce. Many new mothers wish to slap me when I tell my "labor" story. We went in for a routine appointment at 9:00am. We induced at 11:00am. Broke my waters at 1:00pm. I delivered at 4:32pm.

I was all hooked up to the monitors and the baby never showed signs of distress. It was a very uneventful labor in terms of labor stories. But, as the baby was coming out, the Doctor jumped up, started using technical terms to the nurses and getting everyone's attention. The cord was wrapped around our baby's neck. Twice.

What would have happened if I had gone on for my 40 weeks? At this point, doctors weren't doing ultrasounds at the end of the pregnancy to check for this sort of complication. What if we hadn't induced? Would we have lost our baby?

I prefer to look at it that God led us to our decision to induce and gave us our first miracle baby. We survived the stress of Aaron's accident. He had hung on through our car accident. He made it though Mom's infection. He did not become distressed from his cord being wrapped around him. He was perfectly healthy and had a wonderful set of lungs on him. They just weren't sounding so wonderful at 1:00 in the morning!
