CLEVELAND, OH (February 7, 2011) - Imagine attending Mass with a million fellow Catholics with Holy Communion offered by thousands of priests from around the world. Imagine all of this taking place in St. Peter's Square in the heart of the Vatican with Pope Benedict XVI celebrating a very special Mass.

On May 1, Divine Mercy Sunday, Benedict will raise his predecessor and good friend, Pope John Paul II to the fist step in the path to sainthood. Pope Benedict will celebrate the Holy Mass of Beautification before millions in the square and for television viewers around the world. This is the first time a pope has beatified his immediate predecessor.

Who can forget the estimated 3 million who flocked to Rome for John Paul's funeral in 2005. Then the throngs chanted "Santo subito," or sainthood now in Italian. Predictions are for at least that many and possibly more for the mass and beautification. More than 400,000 pilgrims are expected from John Paul's native Poland alone.

The choice of May 1st, the first Sunday after Easter is also significant. It's Divine Mercy Sunday which John Paul himself inaugurated in 2000, after canonizing Sr. Faustina Kowalska, a 20th century mystic to whom he was particularly devoted. It's also date associated with communism as May Day. John Paul is often credited along with President Ronald Reagan with the collapse of totalitarian communism in Eastern Europe.

"The minute I heard the announcement from the Holy See, I was on my international line to Rome booking select hotel rooms from my best four-star hotels just minutes away from St. Peter's," said Jim Adair of The Catholic Tour here. He has been arranging special pilgrimages for Catholics for some 30 years. Hotel rooms in Rome within an easy commute from St. Peter's immediately became a scarce commodity and were snapped up quickly. A number of optional excursions are available including a tour to the monastery founded by St. Benedict in the 5th century, Monte Cassino. It's perched high on an impressive hill overlooking the town of Cassino southeast of Rome. Also available is an excursion to Assisi, the town of St. Francis. A tour will include visits to the Basilica of St. Francis (with the exquisite artwork of Giotto), the convent of St. Clare, and Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels with the Portiuncula chapel.
