FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MEDIA ADVISORY

Phoenix, AZ (June 26, 2015) - For the first time in their 805-year history, the Canons Regular of the Order of the Holy Cross (aka the Crosiers) elected a member from the southern hemisphere to serve as the 58th master general. Fr. Laurentius Tarpin, osc, 46, was elected on the first ballot during the international Order's 2015 General Chapter held in Indonesia.

The election took place in St. Helena Chapel and was presided over by the out-going Master General Glen Lewandowski, osc. When Fr. Tarpin was asked whether he accepted the election results, he affirmed, "If my confreres are asking me for this service, I say yes to the Order's call." Since 2014, he has been the major superior of the Province of Sang Kristus in Bandung, Indonesia.

The election ritual was followed by the Lord's Prayer said in different languages and a sign of peace to the new leader of the Crosier Order. The celebration concluded with the singing of the Te Deum, an ancient Latin hymn used as an expression of thanksgiving on special occasions. A rite of blessing of the master general and his council was celebrated June 26.

Another election that took place during the general chapter was that of a new general council. Fr. Yohanes Berchmans Rosaryanto "Rosa," osc, of Indonesia, Fr. Pierre-Paul Walraet, osc, of the Netherlands, and Fr. Henri Puluku Muhumira, osc, of Congo, will comprise the council of the master general for the next six years.

Fr. Rosa has worked as general secretary for the last number of years; Fr. Pierre-Paul has served as general assistant for six years and another six years as general councilor and has been a member of the council of the prior provincial of the Province of Blessed Theodore de Celles (Europe) for the last number of years; and Fr. Henri has served in the role of general councilor the past four years.

Fr. Thomas Enneking, osc, prior provincial of the Crosier Fathers and Brothers, stated, "This was certainly a key moment in the chapter and an historic election. We thank these four confreres for their generosity of spirit in accepting these significant roles of leadership in the Order."

Fr. Tarpin was born March 9, 1969, in Cisantana, West Java, Indonesia, and comes from a family of six siblings. He joined the Crosiers in 1988, made his first profession of vows Aug. 28, 1990, and was ordained to the priesthood June 26, 1996. In his Crosier life, Fr. Tarpin served as formator in the post-novitiate in Sultan Agung (Indonesia), has been a member of the council of the prior provincial in Sang Kristus, served as vice provincial, was a member of the planning committee for the 2009 General Chapter, and most recently served as prior provincial. He holds a doctorate in moral theology from Alphonsianum in Rome and has served for several years as teacher and vice rector of Catholic Parahyangan University in Indonesia.

He is well known among his confreres for his cheerfulness, his strong commitment for working, his good listening skills and his ability to bring together the voices of all confreres. "We hold Fr. Tarpin and his council in our prayers. May God grant them the wisdom, courage and boldness to help move the Order into the future," said Fr. Tom.

Fr. Tarpin succeeds Fr. Glen Lewandowski, osc, who served as master general for two consecutive terms. He was the first American to serve as leader of the Crosier Order. During his tenure, Fr. Glen traveled extensively throughout the regions of the Order promoting the Crosier identity. In addition, he served on the executive council of the Union of Superiors General and was named by Pope Benedict XVI as a Synod Father, participating in the Bishops Synod on the Word of God in 2008.

The Crosier Fathers and Brothers provide ministry and service to many different groups including seniors on fixed incomes; those who suffer from Alzheimer's disease and their families as they face the many challenges of this condition; the incarcerated to offer them a connection to the faith community; veterans to accompany them in their spiritual healing; immigrants to become citizens and learn English; and young people who seek a spiritual path and purpose in life. They also offer healing, pastoral and sacramental ministries and assistance; pastoral leadership to parishes; spiritual direction and retreats; and mission outreach.

The Crosiers are consecrated men of one the Roman Catholic Church's oldest religious orders. They are also the only religious community whose national headquarters is located within the Diocese of Phoenix. The Crosiers purchased nearly 10 acres of land in South Phoenix in order to build a community hub of spiritual outreach and activity, to expand their ministries and to accompany and serve those in greatest need. The campus, known as the Crosier Village at South Mountain, will serve as a place of light and healing for the greater Phoenix community.

A video about the Crosiers is available on the Crosier website, www.crosier.org. For more information, contact the province office at 602-443-7100.

About the Crosiers:
The Crosiers, officially known as the Canons Regular of the Order of the Holy Cross, were founded in 1210 in modern-day Belgium. For 805 years, the priests and brothers have lived a life of community, prayer and service under the Rule of St. Augustine. The Crosiers have two large, vibrant communities in the United States--one in Phoenix, and the other in Onamia, Minnesota. The Crosiers gather as a community each day to pray the Liturgy of the Hours and celebrate Eucharist. Members are involved in a wide range of ministries serving the Church and those in need, including parish assistance, retreat work, spiritual direction, elder care, immigrant services and jail ministry. There are more than 350 Crosiers today worldwide serving in the United States, Europe, Indonesia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Brazil and Rome.
