The National Catholic Student Coalition Introduces Catholic Students' Week

College campuses and communities across the globe beware and be warned: A rousing Spirit is coming. For the last seven days of September, Catholic students around the world are taking over.

The National Catholic Student Coalition is introducing Catholic Students' Week as a time for Catholic students from around the world to unite. The week will provide an opportunity for Catholic students to promote the teachings of the Catholic Church through service projects and spiritual growth programs. In addition, fun fellowship activities will gather students who share a common passion for the faith.

And it's the Spirit that drives them, according to Kristin Connelly, programming chairwoman for NCSC.

"My hopes for the week are to unite Catholic students across the country to celebrate their faith together," Connelly said. "We are inspired by the Holy Spirit to share our faith, and this is just one way NCSC is helping students to do so."

High school and college students are encouraged to actively participate in the programs offered during CSW. Campus ministry programs and Catholic student organizations will gather in their regions to serve the Church.

Each year, a new theme for Catholic Students' Week will be announced. For the 2005 founding year the theme is "Disciples of the Living Bread: You Are What You Eat!," with a special emphasis placed on the sacredness of the Eucharist in honor of the Year of the Eucharist as declared by the late Pope John Paul II.

"We chose this theme because it is the year of the Eucharist, and we as students should always live the gospel," Connelly said.

The programs and events will be at the discretion of the campus ministries/student organizations at the local level. A suggested schedule of events for Catholic Students' Week would include the following. Monday would be a night to have a witness speak on Catholic identity and his/her involvement in Church. Tuesday would include a social night with entertainment for students to enjoy fellowship. A panel for discussion with a question and answer session on topics ranging from vocations to doctrine would be held on Wednesday. Thursday would provide students with a chance to join in a service project to put their faith in action through service to the Church and/or the community. On Friday a guest speaker would present on the Sacraments, with the evening concluding in Eucharistic Benediction and Exposition. Saturday night would be a celebration of the faith through praise and worship, and on Sunday all students could attend a special mass together.

Although promoted to be a student-run program, students participating in CSW are encouraged to find guest speakers from their area, such as a priest, brother, sister, or professional in a field relating to the theme of CSW, to share with students a new perspective and to assist in the formation of faith and social concern.

As the sponsor and founder of Catholic Students' Week, NCSC is a voice, vision, network, resource, and partner for Catholic students of Catholic and non-Catholic colleges across the nation. For the past twenty years, the NCSC has recognized that college students are a unique demographic and today strives to speak boldly and clearly from this point of view, giving voice to student experiences, concerns and aspirations. As the successor to the National Federation of Catholic College Students and National Newman Club Federation, NCSC plays a pivotal role in Catholic campus ministry in the United States through its close association with sister campus ministry organizations and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

NCSC is the United States chapter of the International Movement of Catholic Students of Pax Romana (IMCS), and in this capacity it embraces the ideals of the Universal Church by working on issues of local and international social justice.
