Franciscan University to Host Year of Faith Symposium on Vatican II

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MEDIA ADVISORY
STEUBENVILLE, OH (April 5, 2013) - As a part of the Year of Faith, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI urged theological institutions to hold conferences on the topic of Vatican II and its importance for the life of the Church today. Franciscan University of Steubenville will respond to this invitation with a symposium titled "Vatican II and the Year of Faith," on Saturday, April 13, 2013.
Choosing the 50th anniversary of the start of the Second Vatican Council to begin the Year of Faith, Benedict XVI called for a renewed reflection on Vatican II and correction of widely held misunderstandings of the council texts, explained Franciscan University theology professor and event co-organizer Dr. Michael Sirilla. The symposium's focus comes from Benedict XVI's words in Porta Fidei, his document inaugurating the Year of Faith:
"The texts... need to be read correctly, to be widely known and taken to heart as important and normative texts of the Magisterium, within the Church's tradition."
The conference will feature three internationally-renowned speakers, addressing the importance of the Second Vatican Council in the fields of philosophy of the human person, patristics, and ecclesiology.
Dr. John Crosby teaches philosophy at Franciscan University and helped to found the school's MA Philosophy Program. He has published two books in the field of philosophy of the human person, and has also done work in the area of ethics, phenomenological realism, and value theory. Crosby will give the first lecture at 11:30 a.m., "The Triumph of Incarnational Humanism at Vatican II."
Father Joseph Lienhard, SJ, teaches theology at Fordham University and serves as editor of Traditio, an international journal of ancient and medieval religion, philosophy, and history. He has published several works, including Contra Marcellum: Marcellus of Ancyra and Fourth-Century Theology, and is currently translating several works of Augustine on the Old Testament. Father Lienhard will give the second lecture at 2:30 p.m., "Faith of Our Fathers: The Fathers of the Church at Vatican II."
Monsignor Paul McPartlan is the Carl J. Peter Professor of Systematic Theology and Ecumenism at the Catholic University of America and a member of the International Theological Commission. He is a member of the Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue Between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church, the Anglicans, and the Methodists. Monsignor McPartlan will give the final lecture at 7:00 p.m., "Christ Our Light: Lumen Gentium and the Program of Vatican II."
Sirilla said the symposium will give participants a better understanding of the Second Vatican Council and its relation to faith and life today. "The Council is a bold witness to Christ in a world that has become increasingly secularized and even antithetical to the truth of Christ and the Gospel," Sirilla said.
"Vatican II and the Year of Faith" will begin Saturday, April 13, with Mass in Christ the King Chapel at 10:00 a.m. The first lecture will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Tony and Nina Gentile Gallery of the J.C. Williams Center and conclude with the final lecture at 7:00 p.m. followed by a roundtable discussion and a reception. The symposium is free and open to the public; registration is not required.
Co-sponsoring the symposium are Franciscan University's Office of Evangelization, Office of Student Life, Office of Academic Affairs, and Theology Department. For more information, contact Dr. Michael Sirilla at msirilla@franciscan.edu or 740-284-5340.
