In the new original CatholicTV Network series, The New and Eternal Word, Monsignor James P. Moroney explores how the Church celebrates the Holy Mass in our day. In particular, he examines how a new Missale Romanum and a new English translation of these prayers can draw us more deeply into the words and rites of the Mass.

The new English translation of the Roman Missale, the official manual for the Roman Catholic Mass, has been approved, and familiar prayers and responses said in churches around the English-speaking world have changed. Priests will now follow newly translated instructions. Prayers used throughout the Mass and some responses of the congregation have also changed. Sacred chants and music used in worship will also be updated.

The new Roman Missale was officially implemented in the United States of America on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011. It will be the most significant change to the Mass in over 40 years.

Pope John Paul II announced a revised version of the Missale Romanum during the Jubilee Year 2000. Among other things, the revised edition of the Missale Romanum contains prayers for the observances of recently canonized saints, additional prefaces for the Eucharistic Prayers, additional Votive Masses and Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Occasions, and some updated and revised rubrics (instructions) for the celebration of the Mass. The English translation of the Roman Missale will also include updated translations of existing prayers, including some of the well-known responses and acclamations of the people.

The Church in the United States has been blessed with the opportunity to deepen its understanding of the Sacred Liturgy, and to appreciate its meaning and importance. Parishes should now be in the planning process for the implementation, with a goal toward executing that plan in the coming months. The parish's leadership and various sectors of the parish community should be catechized to receive the new translation. Musicians and parishioners alike should soon be learning the various new and revised musical settings of the Order of Mass.
