Living the Legacy

ARLINGTON, VA (October 21, 2011) - In many dioceses like Rome, Krakow, and Washington DC the 22 October 2011 will be celebrated this year as the first official memorial of Bl. John Paul II on the Church calendar.

In addition to thanking God with the rest of the Church, for the gifts we have received through Pope John Paul II, Sr. Bernadette Pike MG will begin an international fortnightly series of talks (via video conference) with a group of people who want to learn how to follow Christ in the footsteps of JPII. The series entitled 'Living the Legacy' will be an opportunity to learn about the charism and spirituality of our late Holy Father and we help one another as we strive to put into practice what we are learning.

Sr. Bernadette Pike MG, who did the second reading at the Beatification of Bl JPII, is a 'John Paul II Sister' which is part of the broader group- Missionaries of the Gospel. The MGs are a group established in the Perth (Australia) diocese on 23 June 2011. It is still in its early stages of formation and the first members are receiving formation themselves. It is hoped that there will eventually be many sisters, brothers, priests and lay people who will be bringing to life and continuing the work that the Holy Spirit began in John Paul II.

"It is such a joy for me each time I encounter someone who was touched by the Lord through John Paul II and is now striving to follow his example. It is like connecting with a family member you hadn't yet met. I'm so eager to learn from them, pray with them, and just to spend time together" said Sr. Bernadette MG.

"One only needed to look out at the crowd at his beatification or speak to those who went to great lengths to watch the ceremony on TV/Internet, to realize that the impact of JPII is not just a memory in Church history but an ongoing living movement growing and influencing the Church and the world. It is a great sign of hope."
