University of Dallas Receives $1.5 Million Challenge Grant from The Constantin Foundation

IRVING, TX (JANUARY 30, 2008) - The University of Dallas announced today the award of a three year, $1.5 million challenge grant from The Constantin Foundation. The funds from the grant will match gifts from new donors to the University and increased gifts from past donors, up to $500,000 per year for three consecutive years, to help support the most critical needs of the University.

"The Constantin family and The Constantin Foundation have supported the University of Dallas throughout its history and this tremendous gift is the latest example of their generosity," said Dr. Francis M. Lazarus, president of the University of Dallas. "This grant will allow us to meet the needs of our students and help ensure UD remains a top-ranked, nationally recognized university for years to come."

The undergraduate Constantin College of Liberal Arts at the University is named in honor of Mr. Eugene Constantin, Jr. Mr. Constantin was one of the University's founding members, served as the general chair of the University's first fundraising campaign and provided other major financial support during the University's early years. In 1967, The Constantin Foundation endowed the undergraduate college with $1 million and an additional gift of $5 million was given in 1969. And in 2007, the University met and surpassed a challenge grant of $500,000 from the Foundation.

"The Constantin Foundation has a deep commitment to higher education and, in particular, to the University of Dallas," said Catherine Doyle, executive director of the Foundation. "It was Mr. Constantin's vision to create a strong, vibrant university, and we are pleased to continue his legacy through this gift."

Eugene and Ruth Constantin established The Constantin Foundation in 1947 for the purpose of charitable benefit to the people of Dallas County. The Foundation supports improving the quality of life through contributions to civic, cultural, educational and medical charities, primarily in Dallas County.
