MEDIA ADVISORY
CINCINNATI, OH, OCTOBER 13, 2007 - Several Cincinnati, Ohio and statewide organizations are coming together to search for new ways to collaborate, as well as to find new strategies, for the interfaith community to help build a brighter future for Cincinnati.
Over the next few months, and hopefully years, "The Children of Abraham," will sponsor a wide range of programs as part of this new initiative.
Members of "The Children of Abraham" include The Ohio Humanities Council, Bridges for a Just Community, The Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati, The Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education, The University of Cincinnati, The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and The Brueggeman Center for Dialogue at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
"The kick-off event represents what we hope is a watershed moment in interfaith interaction and engagement in Cincinnati," said Dr. James Buchanan, Director of the Brueggeman Center for Dialogue at Xavier University. "Our long-term hope is that we might be able to build upon a solid past of interfaith dialogue and move toward a new era in which all of the faith communities work together to help Cincinnati realize its full potential as a city. While we are beginning this process with the Abrahamic faith (Christianity, Judaism and Islam) we will quickly move to expand the circle of inclusion to engage all of the various faith communities in this ongoing project. We owe a great debt of gratitude to the Ohio Humanities Council for its involvement in this project which brings so many key organizations together."
On Saturday, October 13, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will unveil a stunning new exhibition which was created for the project by designers at DAPP at the University of Chicago. This display of banners links the three Abrahamic faiths (Islam, Christianity and Judaism): their commonalities, shared history and divergences. It will be on display through November 1.
On Wednesday, October 17 there will be a lunch and discussion featuring Eboo Patel, founder and Executive Director of the Interfaith Youth Corps in Chicago and author of Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation. The lunch will be at noon at the Schiff Family Conference Center at Xavier's Cintas Center. This lunch is by invitation only.
Also on Wednesday, October 17 Patel will be the featured speaker at "Uniting the Children of Abraham; An Interfaith Discussion and Exhibition" at The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center at 7:00 p.m. This event will bring together people of different faiths to celebrate common heritage and to explore ways in which they might work together to make our community a better place to live. This event is also by invitation only. Media interested in covering this event should contact the Freedom Center at 513-333-7589 or at 513-333-7505.
Other upcoming events include:
• Confronting Death: Religious and psychological Explorations: Oct. 27-28, Cintas Center
• Christians and Muslims: Toward a Shared Future: Nov. 7, Cintas Center
• Hassan Abbas: "Can Democracy Work in the Arab World?" Time/Date TBA, Cintas Center
• Artistic Expressions of Faith: March 12, 19, 26 & April 2, 2008; Various Locations
• "I Am You Are" film and discussion with filmmaker Gili Mendel: Sunday, November 4, 5:30 p.m. The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. The Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, and the Jewish Community Relations Council in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati's Israeli Film Festival invite you to view powerful vignettes and discover a journey to break boundaries, create friendship and work towards a more peaceful Jerusalem. This dynamic project brings together Israeli and Palestinian teens to build mutual understanding and respect through the medium of film. After the documentary, we will engage in a meaningful interactive discussion on the implications their journey has towards promoting a more tolerant and inclusive community here in Cincinnati.
