Priest Raps The Truth of Church Teachings

July 6, 2006, New York - When Fr. Stan Fortuna's SACRO SONG 3 drops next week, it will be the completion of his trilogy and another attempt to transform the perceived negativity of hip hop culture into something positive. An accomplished jazz musician and professional bass player, who studied with the late Lennie Tristano (dubbed the father of improvisational jazz), he has successfully recorded, produced and independently-released a number of albums in various musical genres. They are all available through popular online music sites (e.g. iTunes, Amazon.com, CD Baby, etc.), Christian music outlets (e.g. Pauline Books and Media) and through his non-profit company, Francesco Productions.

SACRO SONG 3 is being released on July 4th which may also incite the start of another blistering salvo on his skills. However, critiques on his ability as a rap artist and his propriety as a preacher are nothing new to Fr. Stan Fortuna, a Franciscan Friar of the Renewal and Catholic priest.

"I continue to do rap music because it's a genre that makes the message intelligible to many young people," says Fr. Stan from his office in the Bronx. "And it even challenges people who don't like the genre because rap music affords the message to transcend boundaries and make an impact on the culture."

Embrace your Faith

Whether known to fans as the "rapping reverend" or considered by some staunch Catholics as the "Irreverend Fortuna", Fr. Stan continues to mix music with a positive message. SACRO SONG 3 is his latest attempt to revolutionize the hip hop game by "keeping it real" and "keeping it right".

Many of the songs on his new album are inspired by Fr. Stan's experiences in the South Bronx where he lives and works. When he isn't on the road doing concerts and giving talks, he ministers to the needy in the area. Currently, Fr. Stan is in the process of building the South Bronx Youth Cultural Centre to encourage neighbourhood youth to develop viable arts skills for the work place.

"Ima Do Me" on SACRO SONG 3 is the result of two aspiring young rappers' efforts, youth director Sean Santiago and Glenda Mortoral, who attend the SBYCC. The song deals with their issues growing up in the ghetto. The dark-themed "Daddy Wound" deals with the lack of a father figure in many people's lives and how that effects their outlook. "Got the Mike On" an ode to 'old school' and the jazz/funk-inspired "Ain't No Party" discuss the doctrine of the Catholic faith that is a consistent thread throughout the album. And "Jesus Talks" is Fr. Stan's response to Kanye West's hip hop hit "Jesus Walks".

"Regardless of whatever style of music I do, it's inspired by the people and events of my life. I hope that some of the expressions of my experiences and the experiences of others will touch the hearts of many," says Fr. Stan. "To bring the Gospel to the heart of the contemporary culture in a language that is intelligible is a beautiful thing."

Fr. Stan is an international preacher and musician who is on the road for 2/3 of the year. During the rest of the time, he is actively involved with his order, The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, in the South Bronx. Currently, there is a documentary in production on his life and work to be completed by Winter 2006. All proceeds from his CD's, DVD's, concerts and talks go towards Francesco Productions (www.francescoproductions.com), his non-profit organization that does hands-on work with poor and needy families in the area.
