Food For The Poor Named 19th Largest Charity in US, 1st in Florida

DEERFIELD BEACH, FLORIDA (December 3, 2004) - With the latest ranking of charities in the United States just released by the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Food For The Poor has been rated as the 19th largest charity in the U.S., up from last year's rank of 23. Food For The Poor has this year also become the largest charity in the state of Florida. The Chronicle, which is a major non-profit industry publication, ranks charities based upon the amount of private support received and has rated Food For The Poor as the 5th largest international relief organization in the United States.

The Non-Profit Times 100, which at 16 years is the oldest annual ranking of charities in the country, rated Food For The Poor as the 27th largest charity in the United States. To be included in this listing, which ranks organizations based upon their total income, charities must raise at least 10 percent of total revenue from public sources. During the fiscal year 2003, Food For The Poor realized $405 million in private donations, out of total contributions of $465 million. Notably, Food For The Poor maintained an operating expense ratio of 4.7%.

Food For The Poor serves 16 countries located in the Caribbean and Central America, and has responded overwhelmingly this year to the Caribbean countries in need of hurricane relief. Jamaica, Haiti, Grenada and Grand Bahama have all experienced devastating damage, and desperately need a continuing relief effort. Food For The Poor, through a strategic deployment of resources, was able to expedite the assistance to the affected areas immediately.

According to Robin Mahfood, president of Food For The Poor, "Our commitment to aid the poorest of the poor continues to be the motivating force for this organization. The recent hurricane damage in multiple countries has only intensified our efforts to aid those who cannot help themselves."

Food For The Poor is a Christian relief and development organization that has implemented a highly efficient strategy for aiding the destitute, and remains the #1 relief agency in the Caribbean and Central America. In the last 22 years, with the support of our committed donors, FFP has shipped over 28,000 trailers of aid to the region. Food For The Poor maintains a low overhead ratio of 4.7%.
