Diners requested to bring nonperishable food items for the Plainfield Interfaith Food Pantry
Weekly proceeds to be donated to non-profit community organizations
PLAINFIELD, IL (March 1, 2011) - As the snow and cold of winter give way to the sun and warmth of spring, Christians all across the world begin to prepare themselves for the resurrection of Jesus Christ at Easter with Lent. A period of sacrifice, repentance, service and alms giving, Catholics over the age of 14 years are asked to abstain from eating meat on the six Fridays of Lent.
Knights of Columbus, Good Shepherd Council 5571 Grand Knight Fred Kunst, today announced the return of the annual community fry with the 32nd Lenten Friday Fish Fry starting March 11, 2011 at St. Mary Immaculate Parish, 15629 South Route 59, Plainfield with new hours for 2011 from 4:00 P.M. - 7:30 P.M. The Lenten fish fry's will be held on every Friday of Lent ending April 15, 2011. Carry-out orders may be placed by calling 815-436-2651, extension 841 between the hours of 4:15 to 7:00 pm. Patrons are requested to bring nonperishable food items for the Plainfield Interfaith Food Pantry.
"We touch so many lives with over 7,000 meals being served, that asking everyone who will attend to bring a nonperishable food item to benefit those in need is a way to alleviate some suffering, even if only temporarily," said Grand Knight Kunst. "It would be great it over the course of six weeks that we could collect a ton of food from the thousands of people that will attend. Two thousand pounds of nonperishable food is a goal that I believe we as a community can meet."
Long an annual staple of the Plainfield community for the past 32 years, the weekly fish fry will feature several meal options on the menu with your choice of Icelandic Cod deep fried or baked, shrimp dinners, Deacon Jim's Grilled Cheese sandwich, Deacon Tom's Fries, fish sandwiches, as well as slices of cheese or veggie pizza. Dinner choices include baked potato or fries, coleslaw, roll and butter. Beverages including pop, water, cocktails, beer and wine are available for purchase at the cash bar. The Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights will be sponsoring the annual dessert table of homemade delicious treats of cakes, cookies, candies and other mouth-watering delights.
All fish is battered and deep fried in peanut oil, meaning 0gram Trans Fats from the oil. Diners with allergies to peanuts or peanut derived products should order the cheese or veggie pizza or the grilled cheese sandwich.
Each night a 50/50 raffle will be conducted throughout the entire season of Lenten fish fry's. Additionally, other raffle tickets for purchase for prizes to be awarded at the conclusion of Lenten fish fry's. There will be games for children as well.
"Our members are dedicated Catholic men and women through the Auxiliary, who care deeply about the community. We serve many different faiths during the fish fry's and it is a way we all come together, break bread and build fellowship with Christians around the world", said Deputy Grand Knight Peter Hurtado. "The money raised from this annual event is donated to local charitable organizations, St. Mary Immaculate ministries and to support the seminarians of the Diocese of Joliet."
