Our Lord asks, "Salt is good, but if salt becomes insipid, with what will you restore its flavor?" Likewise, Christians are good, but only if they maintain their "flavor." This means the universal Christian apostolate of seeking our salvation as well as our neighbors', which means we must beware of the corrupting force of the world and actively fighting against it. The Second Vatican Council tells us, "... the member who fails to make his proper contribution to the development of the Church must be said to be useful neither to the Church nor to himself."
