St. Croix, the largest of the Virgin Islands, lies about forty miles south of St. Thomas. It covers eighty square miles. St. Croix makes up about two-thirds of the total area of the Virgin Islands, and has almost half of its population. It is the only island with any large areas of level land. Sugar cane raising supplies the chief industry. Christiansted and Frederiksted are the only two cities on the island. The people usually call St. Croix SANTA CRUZ (holy cross), the name given the island by Christopher Columbus.
