Bishop and the biographer of St. Augustine of Hippo. A disciple generally considered the favorite of Augustine, Possidius was a convert from paganism and was at Augustine's side when he died at Hippo. Chosen bishop of Calama, in Numidia, in 397, he assisted Augustine against the heretical movements of Donatism and Pelagianism. Possidius was driven into exile to Apulia, Italy, by the Arian Vandals who overran Africa and persecuted orthodox clergy. He compiled a list of Augustine's works and wrote a brief account of the great saint's life, the Vita Augustini.
