The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts Faith and Reason Scholarship Essay Contest

The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts invites students to enter the Faith and Reason Scholarship Essay Contest. The College will award the four-year, half-tuition Scholarship to as many as four winners. Honorable Mention scholarships will also be awarded. To be eligible, students must be applying to the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts as first-time freshmen or transfer students, full-time, for the 2003-2004 academic year.

Pope John Paul II has proclaimed Thomas More the patron saint of statesmen and politicians, adding to More's position as patron of lawyers. Already distinguished in his own times as a man of great learning, wit, and faith, he was martyred over a point of law. His life may be viewed as an example of the unity of faith and reason. Yet from the perspective of those around him, including his family, More's actions seemed anything but reasonable, prudent, or wise; in fact, his death seemed more like folly. In your essay, explain how Thomas More's death affirms his life's work of unifying faith and reason. Some suggested readings: Robert Bolt's play A Man for All Seasons (also a film), Peter Ackroyd's The Life of Thomas More, and The Last Letters of Thomas More, Ed. Fr. Alvaro De Silva.

Essays must be 3 to 5 pages in length, typed, double-spaced, on 8.5 x 11 white paper. Do not write your name on your essay; mail with your essay a 3 x 5 card with your name, address, and phone number. Essays must be postmarked by February 5, 2003. Scholarship winners will be notified by March 5, 2003. E-mailed or faxed essays will not be considered. Essays must be accompanied or preceded by an application for admission to Thomas More College. The application for admission may be requested from the College or downloaded from the Colege's website at www.thomasmorecollege.edu. Applicants to the College will also be considered for other scholarships and awards.

The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts was founded in 1978 by Catholic educators. It is a four-year institution, with a 48-credit humanities core focusing on the classics of the western tradition. It offers a spring semester in Rome for sophomores and a two-week summer program for high school students.
