LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Pope Francis celebrated his 81st birthday on Sunday with a pizza party. To help him eat the pizza, the Holy Father invited children from the Vatican's health clinic to join him.

The celebration also coincided with the Pope's weekly appearance, and he took the occasion to ask children to speak to their grandparents, and to pray to God. "The joy of children is a treasure," Pope Francis said, "and we ought to do everything so that they continue to be joyous. A joyous spirit is like good land that grows life well, with good fruit."

He continued, saying that grandparents "have memory, have roots, and it will be the grandparents that give roots to the children."  He warned against children without memory, "uprooted children, without the memory of a people, without the memory of the faith, without the memory of so many beautiful things that have made up history, without the memory of values."

"And who will help children to do this? he asked. "The grandparents... who love us very much."
He also asked parents to "teach them to talk with God... May they learn to pray, to say what they feel in their heart... It is joy, to talk with the grandparents, with the elderly, and to talk with God."

Pope Francis was then served his 13-foot-long, rectangular pizza, topped with cheese. In Italy, pizzas served at parties are often rectangular in shape. The Pope asked the children to eat all of the pizza, saying it would help them grow.

The Pope was also presented with a birthday cake that depicted him walking with the Earth on his shoulders, and in his hand a briefcase with the word "Valores" (Values) on it.

Happy birthday, Pope Francis!
