Saint Rafael Guízar y Valencia was a Mexican bishop who served the Catholic Church during a time of violent persecution. Born in Cotija, he was ordained a priest and became known for his missionary zeal, love for the sacraments, and concern for the poor.

As Bishop of Veracruz, Rafael continued to form priests and minister to the faithful even when he had to work in hiding. He endured exile and hardship rather than abandon his flock. Pope Benedict XVI canonized him in 2006.
