Physician and martyr with Alexander, Asterius, and companions. The son of a Roman general, he earned the nickname "the merciful" owing to charitable service to the poor and sick in the town of Anazarbus, in Cilicia (Asia Minor). He was martyred at Aegae, in Cilicia, by beheading after drowning failed to kill him. Asterius and Alexander were two Roman executioners or perhaps bystanders who were put to death with him because of their display of compassion.
