Sausage entrepreneur and entertainer was 81

"Big John . Big John . Big Bad John .Big John," went the ominous chorus to country singer Jimmy Dean's hit single "Big John." Dean, who would record other hit songs such as "Little Black Book" and "P.T. 109," about John F. Kennedy's command in the South Pacific during World War II, has died of natural causes. He was 81 years old.

While he recorded a string of hit singles, the American public best remembers country singer Jimmy Dean with his brand of sausages, which he founded in the Sixties.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Dean died at his home in Varina, Virginia, with his wife Donna by his side. A member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Dean is best known musically for his song "Big Bad John," which made it to No. 1 on both the country and pop charts in 1961. The song also was awarded with a Grammy. His narrative "talk-sing" style of songwriting produced a slew of hits. Starting in 1963, he hosted a successful variety show on ABC called "The Jimmy Dean Show," which ran for three years. "Rowlf," a piano-playing dog puppet by Jim Henson made the character an early Muppet favorite. In the late 1960s, Dean also appeared regularly on the NBC series "Daniel Boone," playing Boone's friend Josh Clements. It was around this time Dean would start the Jimmy Dean Meat Company, for which he is perhaps best known. Jimmy Dean sausages remain a favorite American name brand of meat. While Dean eventually sold his meat company to Sara Lee Foods in 1984, he remained its chairman and TV spokesman, which kept him in the public eye. Dean was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame this year.
