Among the most unsteady and unreliable of all worlds is the world of the Hollywood sequel or remake. Director Tim Burton, currently promoting "Big Eyes" and actor Michael Keaton are busy these days, but there is a chance that the duo may reunite to do a sequel to their 1988 comedy-horror hit "Beetlejuice," "Beetlejuice 2."
"Bio-Exorcist" Beetlejuice, as played by Michael Keaton, tried to evict the obnoxious Deitz family from a happily haunted house in the 1988 film.
LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Michael Keaton as far back as February that he was in only if director Burton was. In October, Keaton mentioned that they were waiting for a script. Burton has since declared that "Beetlejuice 2" with familiar faces returning.
His response to the question of whether or not Winona Ryder, who played the morose Goth teenager Delia Dietz will be returning? "Oh yeah, yeah yeah yeah," he said. "Oh yeah, oh yeah. Yeah yeah, oh yeah."
The original "Beetlejuice" is fondly remembered for blackly hilarious scenes such as this one: The recently departed must hear their cases before waiting in this most unusual waiting room.
Burton did say that working with Ryder on a recent video for The Killers helped influence his decision to return to the frightful franchise.
"I worked with [Ryder], I hadn't seen her in awhile . and she was so great," Burton said. "I was so happy to see her. So those kinds of elements mean something to me. Michael, and her. and that character, I just miss it, there's some freedom about that character that I love."
Those hoping to see Michael Keaton return to his Beetlejuice role have been fed conflicting information.
Tim Burton and Keaton both talked "the Ghost with the most" this weekend, only they shared conflicting information.
Director Burton says, "It's a character that I love and I miss and I miss actually working with Michael. There's only one Betelgeuse. We're working on a script and I think it's probably closer than ever and I'd love to work with him again."
Keaton reported the exact opposite: "Tim Burton and I have emailed about it. We're both in the same situation (of always being busy on other projects). Neither one of us gets tired of the conversation. Tim says he's working on something, and then goes away for a while. At some point, someone is going to say we really want to do it. You don't want to fuck it up, so it has to be perfect."
In the original "Beetlejuice," Keaton, as the titular fiend helped drive an obnoxious human family from a happily haunted house - but at an unspoken price. The original film successfully combined surreal elements with the mundane and commonplace, as well as frightening elements with slapstick humor.
