St. Anthony the Great is regarded as a father of Christian monasticism. Born in Egypt to wealthy Christian parents, he gave away his inheritance after hearing the Gospel call to sell his possessions and follow Christ. He first lived an ascetic life near his village, then withdrew to a tomb and later to the desert. After many years of solitude, disciples gathered around him, and his example helped shape the monastic life of the Church. St. Athanasius recorded his life.
