Blessed Jean-Baptiste Turpin du Cormier and eighteen companions were martyred in the Mayenne region of France during the French Revolution. Fourteen priests were guillotined at Laval on January 21, 1794, after refusing the Civil Constitution of the Clergy; other members of the group included religious women and a laywoman. Pope Pius XII beatified all nineteen in 1955.
