Saint Stephen of Perm was a missionary bishop who learned the language and customs of the Zyrian people in order to proclaim the Gospel among them. He translated Christian teaching and liturgical texts so that the people could hear and pray the faith in their own tongue.
Stephen founded churches, instructed converts, and defended the people entrusted to him from exploitation and pagan fear. His missionary charity and courage made him a great evangelizer of the Russian North.
