Saint María de las Maravillas de Jesús was a Spanish Discalced Carmelite nun who combined a deep contemplative life with generous apostolic service. Born in Madrid, she entered Carmel with a desire to belong entirely to Christ and to live in the spirit of Saint Teresa of Jesus and Saint John of the Cross.
She founded and restored Carmelite monasteries, guided her sisters with maternal charity, and cared for the poor and suffering during times of persecution. Pope John Paul II canonized her in 2003.
