Saint Theophanes the Confessor was a Byzantine monk, abbot, historian, and defender of the veneration of sacred images. Born into a noble family, he renounced wealth and embraced the monastic life of prayer, fasting, and obedience.

During the persecution of the iconoclasts, Theophanes suffered imprisonment and exile because he defended the Church’s teaching on the honor given to holy images. He remained faithful to the truth and is remembered as a confessor of the Catholic faith.
