Saint Melania the Younger was a Roman Christian woman who renounced the security of wealth in order to live for God and the service of the Church. After the death of her children, she and her husband embraced a life of continence, prayer, and generous care for the poor.

Melania supported monasteries and charitable works in Rome, North Africa, and the Holy Land. She eventually lived as an ascetic near Jerusalem, where she founded religious communities and remained devoted to prayer until her death in 439.
