Saint Meinrad of Einsiedeln was a Benedictine monk and hermit who sought God in solitude, prayer, and obedience. He entered the monastery of Reichenau and later withdrew to the forest where he lived a life of ascetic discipline and hospitality.

Meinrad was murdered by robbers who had mistaken his charity for the possession of treasure. His hermitage became the foundation of Einsiedeln Abbey, one of the great pilgrimage places of Switzerland. The Church honors him as a martyr and a model of contemplative life.
