Saint Maria Katharina Kasper was a German virgin and foundress of the Institute of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. Born in Dernbach, she learned to recognize Christ in the sick, the poor, and those who were neglected by society.
She gathered companions and established a community devoted to nursing, Christian education, and works of mercy. Katharina accepted hardship with humility and trusted that the work belonged to God. Pope Francis canonized her in 2018.
