Blessed Pedro Armengol was a Spanish nobleman who experienced a profound conversion from a violent life and entered the Order of Mercy. He dedicated himself to the redemption of Christians held captive in Muslim lands and willingly risked his life to free those in danger of apostasy.
On one mission he remained as a hostage while his companions sought the ransom for captives. Pedro endured great suffering with trust in Christ and continued to serve the Church after returning to Spain. His cult was approved by Pope Innocent XI, and the Roman Martyrology remembers him as a model of penitence and merciful charity.
