Saint Joachim Sakakibara was a Japanese Catholic layman who assisted the missionaries and the Christian community during a time of severe persecution. He gave practical service to the Church and remained faithful when the profession of the Catholic faith was punished by death.

Joachim was martyred in Japan in 1622 together with other companions. His witness shows the courage of the lay faithful who supported the proclamation of the Gospel and remained united to Christ in the midst of suffering.
