Saint Giovanni Battista Scalabrini was born at Fino Mornasco, Italy, on July 8, 1839. Ordained a priest and later appointed bishop of Piacenza, he combined a deep love for the Eucharist and the poor with a vigorous commitment to the teaching of the Catholic faith.

Moved by the suffering of Italian emigrants, he founded the Missionaries of Saint Charles Borromeo and the Missionary Sisters of Saint Charles Borromeo to accompany migrants and preserve their faith. He is remembered as a father of migrants. Pope Francis canonized him on October 9, 2022.
