St. Oscar Romero was a shepherd who gave his life for his flock, a quiet priest who became a bold voice for justice, and a martyr whose blood still speaks to the Church today.

Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez was born on August 15, 1917, in Ciudad Barrios, El Salvador. Raised in a humble family, he learned the value of hard work early in life, even training as a carpenter as a young boy. Yet, at just 13 years old, he felt a deeper calling; he wanted to become a priest. He entered the seminary and later traveled to Rome for further studies, where he was ordained in 1942.

Returning to El Salvador, Father Romero served faithfully in parish life. He was known as a quiet, thoughtful, and traditional priest, deeply devoted to prayer, the sacraments, and the teachings of the Church. Over time, he was entrusted with greater responsibilities, becoming a seminary rector, then an auxiliary bishop, and eventually Archbishop of San Salvador in 1977.

At the time of his appointment, El Salvador was in turmoil. The country was ruled by a powerful elite, while the majority of people lived in poverty. Violence and injustice were increasing. Many believed Archbishop Romero would be a "safe" choice; someone who would not challenge the status quo.

But God had other plans.

Just weeks after his appointment, Romero's close friend, Father Rutilio Grande, was assassinated for defending the poor. This moment changed Romero forever. He began to speak out courageously against injustice, violence, and oppression. From the pulpit, over the radio, and in public statements, he called for respect for human dignity and urged soldiers to follow God's law above unjust orders.

He became a voice for the voiceless.

Despite threats to his life, Archbishop Romero refused to remain silent. He knew the danger, yet he continued to preach truth with love and conviction. On March 24, 1980, while celebrating Mass in a hospital chapel in San Salvador, he was shot and killed. He died at the altar, offering his life in union with Christ's sacrifice.

St. Oscar Romero was beatified in 2015 and canonized in 2018 by Pope Francis. The Church recognizes him as a martyr, one who gave his life out of love for Christ and His people.

Today, St. Oscar Romero stands as a powerful witness to the Gospel. He reminds us that holiness is not always loud or dramatic; it often begins in quiet faithfulness. But when the moment comes, true discipleship requires courage.

His life calls every Catholic to defend the dignity of every human person, to stand firm in truth, and to trust in God even in the face of fear.

St. Oscar Romero, pray for us.
