Martyr of Japan. Of Spanish descent, he was born in Flanders and worked as a tailor in Brussels until joining the Franciscans as a lay brother. He was sent first to Mexico as a missionary and then to the Philippines where, at Cebu, he received ordination. In 1613, he went on to Japan, working there until his arrest by Japanese authorities and his execution at Nagasaki. He was beatified in 1867.
