LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - With the inclusion of the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, France was able to double the number of jets they could carry, bringing the number up to 26. After only a few days of practice, the jets were deployed to hit Raqqa, one of ISIS' strongholds.
The Russian air force flew 141 missions over Syria and destroyed 472 ISIS targets this weekend, with the Russian Defense Ministry saying their bombing campaign has been greatly improved.Moscow had originally launched a bombing campaign at the end of September, but it was halted when ISIS destroyed a Russian airliner over Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, killing 224 passengers.
Following the Paris terror attacks, the bombings have resumed. Russian president Vladimir Putin arrived in Iran on Monday to speak with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Hassan Rouhani.Meanwhile, flights between northern Iraq are suspended for the next 48 hours to avoid conflict with Russian cruise missiles heading to Syria.
In a statement referring to airports in the Kurdish region, Iraq's Civil Aviation Authority revealed the suspension of all flights from and to Irbil and Sulaimaniyah airports, in a decision to "protect passengers and because of the crossing of cruise missiles and bombers."
Sulaimaniyah airport director Tahir Abdullah claims the decision to suspend flights was the result "of the intensification of Russian missile attacks on Daesh [Arabic acronym for ISIS] strongholds in Syria."
