'We have become concerned that the plane may well have been brought down by an explosive device.'

Investigations indicate downed Russian plane could be the result of explosives, meanwhile the Islamic State continues to claim responsibility.

strong>UPDATE: As of 3:08 PM EST, U.S. Intelligence officials believe that Metrojet Flight 9268 was brought down by a bomb planted by ISIS operatives. We will continue to provide updates as this story develops.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - On Wednesday the British Prime Minister's Office reported the passenger plane that crashed on the Sinai peninsula could have been downed by a bomb, which is exactly what the Islamic State hoped would be discovered.

Earlier reports by ISIS went ignored as the terrorist group attempted to claim responsibility for the downed aircraft. Unlike their usual claims to horrific acts of terror, the group refused to release information to prove they were involved in the flight's fate and claimed they would eventually reveal more details of their involvement.

The claim was released on social media and the male voice repeated that Sinai Province had "taken down" the jet. They then issued a challenge to the international team of investigators to prove ISIS was not involved:

"Take the crashed plane and search it, take the black box and analyze it. Tell us what you found in your investigation, show us your expertise and prove, if you can, that it wasn't us who took the plane down or how it fell."

The speaker then continued, saying the Sinai Province was "under no obligation to reveal the method by which [they] took [the plane] down." He continued, stating "we were the ones, with God's grace, who made the plane fall and we will reveal how we took it down when and how we see fit."

The British Prime Minister's office said, "While the investigation is still ongoing we cannot say categorically why the Russian jet crashed. But as more information has come to light we have become concerned that the plane may well have been brought down by an explosive device."

The Aviation Safety Network reported the plane's tail once struck a runway while landing in Cairo in 2001 and need repairs. At the time it was registered to the Lebanese carrier Middle East Airlines. CNN aviation analyst Mary Sciavo believes something could have gone wrong with the repair and led to the plane's failure.

Schiavo, who is a former inspector general for the U.S. Department of Transportation, said the distance from the tail to the rest of the debris could be telling. "To me, it says [the tail] exited the plane before [an] explosive event and before the fire engulfed the plane ... A bad repair is like a ticking time bomb, because once it's on the plane, it stays with the plane forever."

Metrojet Flight 9268 was heading from Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg, Russia, when it crashed for reasons unknown in Sinai and killed all 224 people on board. Prime Minister David Cameron's office said British flights are no longer allowed to leave Sharm el-Sheikh.
