El 27 de diciembre de 1983, hace exactamente 35 anos, el Papa San Juan Pablo II perdono en persona a Ali Agca, el turco que le disparo varias veces en la Plaza de San Pedro dejandolo al borde de la muerte.

REDACCIoN CENTRAL (ACI Prensa) - El 13 de mayo de 1981 en la Plaza de San Pedro en el Vaticano, Mehmet Ali Agca disparo en varias oportunidades contra el Papa San Juan Pablo II. Herido, el Santo Padre fue conducido al Hospital Gemelli, donde permanecio durante varios meses.

San Juan Pablo II expreso pĂşblicamente su perdon al turco en varias oportunidades, pero en el encuentro de 1983 el ofrecimiento lo hizo en persona.

El encuentro de diciembre de 1983 se realizo en la carcel de Rebibbia en Roma, donde Agca cumplia su condena.

Sin embargo, tal como revelo en 2011 el exvocero vaticano Joaquin Navarro Valls, de parte del turco no hubo "ninguna palabra de perdon. Estaba (Agca) obsesionado con lo que habia leido en los diarios. Solo le pregunto por el tercer secreto de la Virgen de Fatima".

Posteriormente, en el ano 2000, Ali Agca fue indultado por el presidente italiano. Sin embargo, al llegar a Turquia fue nuevamente encarcelado por los varios delitos que tenia pendientes con la justicia de su pais.

En 2010 fue puesto en libertad y llevado a un hospital militar para ser revisado y ver si podia servir en el ejercito turco. Sin embargo, uno de sus abogados, Yilmaz Abosoglu, revelo a la prensa internacional que Agca fue encontrado mentalmente inestable y fue eximido.

En 2013 Agca publico el libro "Me prometieron el paraiso. Mi vida y la verdad sobre el atentado al Papa", donde culpo al ayatola Jomeini de Iran de haber ordenado el ataque. Esta afirmacion fue desmentida por el P. Federico Lombardi al advertir que el turco reinvento la conversacion que tuvo con San Juan Pablo II.

"ÂżTenemos que creer esta vez a Agca? Yo creo que no", escribio el P. Lombardi en un texto difundido el 1 de febrero de 2013.
