LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Two knife-armed terrorists who claimed ISIS affiliation, have attacked a Catholic church in St. Etienne-du-Rouvrary. The town is northwest of Paris.
The two attackers hit the church at 9am, during Mass, sneaking in through a back entrance. They shouted "Allahu Akbar" as they attacked. They slit the throat the parish priest, Jacques Hamel, 84, after forcing him to his knees.
The terrorists took four other people hostage, two nuns and two parishioners. One of these people was also seriously injured, but their identity has not been released.
A third nun managed to escape the attack and alerted authorities who were on scene within minutes. Eventually, the two terrorists exited the building and were promptly shot dead by police.
One of the attackers has been identified as a local man who had aspirations of joining ISIS. The man had been previously arrested by police for attempting to travel to Syria. He was forced to wear an electronic monitoring device and was required to keep a curfew. His curfew was from 8:30am to 12:30pm. The attack took place between 9am and 11am.
Pope Francis has expressed shock and dismay at the brutal attack.
The church itself appears to have been on an ISIS hit list that French authorities discovered last April.
The Islamic State believes it is fighting a crusade against the west, and the Catholic Church in particular. They represent an existential threat to the world. The entire world has a moral obligation to work in concert to end this threat by all means necessary. The fact that this organization exists as a virtual nation state is a serious moral failing of all the world's civilized nations.
NOTE: An initial report indicated Fr. Hamel was 86 and was beheaded. These details are inaccurate. We have updated this story to reflect the updated facts as submitted via newswire reports. We have corrected his age, 84, and manner of death.
Light a prayer candle for Fr. Jacques Hamel
