LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) -  After the terrorist attack at the Brussels airport, Mason's father, Chad Wells, told ABC News that Mason was "extremely close to the blast" and his Achilles tendon was ruptured, he received second-and-third-degree burns on his face and hands and was injured from shrapnel.

With his parents in Utah, Mason was moved to a hospital, where he underwent surgery and was given a positive diagnosis.

Wells stated: "We are grateful that our son, Elder Mason Wells, survived the attack and is receiving quality medical care. We have spoken to him briefly and he feels blessed that he wasn't injured more given his close proximity to the bomb.

"He has undergone surgery to repair his Achilles heel and he's also been treated for burns and shrapnel injuries. As a family, we feel the power of prayer from those we know and those who only heard Mason's name for the first time today. We will continue to pray and hope for everyone affected by this tragedy."

Though Mason's injuries sound serious, he told his parents over a phone conversation that the burns were not as bad as they might have sounded, and that doctors believe they will not leave any scars.

Mason also told his parent's they shouldn't feel obligated to travel to Europe, but admitted, "I'm not gonna stop you if you guys...if you want to."

Mason is expected to remain hospitalized for several weeks, but his father was still relieved. "It's a miracle he's alive. It's a blessing from God he's alive," Wells said. "He's just grateful to be alive, to have survived this, we're grateful that he survived such a horrible thing, because being right there at ground zero, and right next to the attack - and to survive - is nothing short of a huge miracle."

Kymberly Wells, Mason's mother, recalled, "It had shaken their bodies and he [Chad] had taken Mason to our hotel and said to stay there. Mason was very calm and composed."

In yet another close call, Mason was in France during the Paris attacks. Kymberly stated: "Mason has always assured us that he is safe and careful. I told him first and foremost always be aware of your surroundings, please be very careful when you're traveling be very observant to people around you."

Chad Wells shared that Mason was present for a third terrorist attack and was only one block away from the finish line when the Boston Marathon bombing occurred.

"I think the Boston experience helped him to stay calm," Wells explained, then recalled the words a Mormon official shared with the Wells family about their son: "[D]espite being on the ground and bleeding[, Mason] was actually had [sic] a sense of humor and remained calm through the situation. That's our Mason."

Wells reported Mason's dream is to one day join the U.S. Naval Academy despite his injuries. "The way we get back on our feet after something like this happens is a true test of character," Wells stated. "He was blessed significantly by God. We see a blessing by this, not a terrible curse."
