Over 30 people killed - and even more seriously injured

The entire world is shaken following the devastating and shocking bombings in Brussels, Belgium. Firsthand recounts of the unimaginable terror speak of apocalyptic scenes after three explosions erupted in two different areas of Brussels.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The first two blasts were set off around 8 am at the Brussels Airport leaving 14 people dead and 35 injured, according to the Daily Mail. The third explosion occurred 79 minutes later at 9:19 am in a Brussels' Metro station, located just 1,300 feet from the EU headquarters, killing 20 people and injuring 55.

"The two explosions were almost simultaneous," explained Samir Derrouich, an airport restaurant employee. "They were both at a check-in desk. One was close to the Starbucks. It was awful. There was just blood. It was like the apocalypse."

The airport bombings, detonated near the American Airlines and Brussels Airlines check-in desks, left a scene of horror in its wake, with splattered blood and body parts, blown out windows and collapsed ceilings.

"My first intuition was to get out in case their were attackers with guns," expressed Dries Valaert, who was waiting by a check in desk when the airport blasts struck. "I saw a woman around 18 years old with a hole in her hand with blood pouring out and a man with an injured ankle and two people down. There was lots of panic. People were running all over the place."

According to the Daily Mail, all flights going in to Brussels were diverted or canceled as the airport remains on lockdown. People awaiting their flights were slowly evacuated, leaving behind their carry-on luggage as the officials searched for any more explosives. Reports surfaced claiming an unexploaded suicide vest was located among the blast wreckage and a Kalashnikov rifle was found beside the body of a terrorist.

Survivors from the Metro station attack describe a similar scene of tragedy. Smoke poured out of the tunnels and the dead "littered the pavement outside."

"The metro was leaving Maelbeek station when there was a really loud explosion. It was panic everywhere. There were a lot of people in the metro," recounted Alexandre Brans.

The terrorist attacks came just days following the Belgian capital's issued state of high alert after the Paris terror attack suspect was arrested in the city last week.

"We know that stopping one cell can... push others into action. We are aware of it in this case," stated Belgium's Interior Minister, Jan Jambon.

Since the attacks, ISIS loyalists have taken to social media to praise, celebrate and threaten more violence, according to Vocativ.

"With the permission of God, the lions came to take revenge for the killing of Muslims in Syria and Iraq," one supporter of the terror group posted on Twitter.

"#Brussels, if you continue your war against the religion of Allah then this is our response," posted another.

"What we feared has happened," Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel told reporters. "In this time of tragedy, this black moment for our country, I appeal to everyone to remain calm but also to show solidarity."
