MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - Olive Garden, a semi-Italian food chain, will be making their new breadstick sandwiches available in two delicious flavors --- meatball parm and chicken, starting June 1.
The big twist however, is that, like with other Olive Garden menu items, they will also be serving unlimited breadsticks with the breadstick sandwiches.
Jeff Smith, the CEO of Starboard Value, told Wall Street Week on May 10 that Olive Garden's breadsticks have been known to represent a "great brand equity."
The restaurant's sandwich breadsticks will cost seven to eight dollars and will be sold in a shorter and wider form than the regular sticks, according to Olive Garden representative, Justin Sikora.
However, in a treatise on what's wrong with Olive Garden and its management, Starboard Value investors suggest that the quasi-Italian restaurant is being reckless with its unlimited serving of breadsticks.
This, according to Starboard Value, leads to waste and wasted food. The strong suggestion is for Olive Garden to control their serving of breadsticks.
"Darden management readily admits that after sitting just seven minutes, the breadsticks deteriorate in quality," Starboard said.
Still, Smith hopes for positivity with the investment fund on Olive Garden's parent company, Darden Restaurants, so this is a U-turn for the CEO. In the fall, Starboard formally told Darden Restaurants to change its operations and suggested for Darden to start including a tip to limit the quantity of breadsticks per table.
Smith backtracked after the short disturbance and stated, "I actually like the breadsticks," and "It wasn't about getting rid of the unlimited breadsticks, it was about the discipline."
