LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - "Jesus Christ, the incarnation of God's mercy, out of love for us, died on the cross, and out of love he rose again from the dead," read the Holy Father's tweet.
His connection to the Christ's love opened him up to the Twitter trolls and a round of sickening and sexually-explicit abuse. Just seconds after making his post, other Twitter users pounced.
One post read "Smells like b*******," while another stated "Lady Gaga is better," and others used insulting emojis.
One of the more abusive and outrageous posts read "f*** me with a the cross and get the devil out of my p****."
Why are people who hold such hatred toward the pope and our religion even following the pontiff's Twitter account? They are simply trolls looking for attention, but these disgusting and horrendous comments do nothing but make us stronger. There will always be people out there who question your faith and try to tear you down, but we must stand together as one and not succumb to such barbaric hate.
Last month, Pope Francis made an inspiring visit to Lesbos and stunned parts of the world by bringing some refugees back to the Vatican with him. This move was seen as "highly symbolic" at a time when Europe continues to struggle with its growing mass of refugees.
