LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to Daily Mail, Sean Penn's meeting with drug kingpin El Chapo was orchestrated by director Oliver Stone, who attempted to purchase the drug lord's life rights for $6 million.
In the interview, published by Rolling Stone, Penn originally claimed he interviewed El Chapo for journalistic reasons, but the documentary revealed the actor's intentions were really in pursuit of a role.
The one-hour documentary, titled "El Chapo & Sean Penn: Bungle in the Jungle," explains El Chapo Guzmán only met with the actor because he was interested in his life story being featured in a movie.
The drug lord admitted he watched a lot of Netflix while he was in hiding. It was then he came across "Narcos," a television series about his Colombian counterpart, and he wanted to be seen in the same light.
Chris Brancato, the co-creator and producer of "Narcos," speaks in the documentary. "I spoke with a friend of mine whose one of the people whose life rights we had for Narcos and he's involved with the DEA and he said El Chapo saw Narcos while on the run.
During his interview with Guzmán, Penn continued to hide the identities of the two men who accompanied himself and Mexican actress Kate del Castillo to the jungle, but the documentary exposed them as two Argentinian movie producers: Fernando Sulichin and José Ibáńez.
Sharon Waxman, editor-in-chief of The Wrap, speaks in the documentary. She explains, "At the end of the day [Penn] sat there with a fugitive drug lord for seven hours and didn't interview him.
"They sat around and drank beers and ate tacos. The whole thing is very much through the looking glass."
Raquel "Queen of the Ball," a bondswoman, added: "The meeting may not have helped his Rolling Stone article, but I'm sure it helped him as an actor tremendously - how he walks, how he talks.
"Seven hours of somebody, I'm sure, is a great study."
