LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - The O.J. Simpson trial riveted the country as the legendary football icon stood accused of the grisly murder of two people. According to prosecutors, O.J. Simpson slashed and stabbed his ex-wife Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman, a waiter.
The case became the most publicized in history with court proceedings broadcast live on television. The prosecution was confident in its case, despite the fact no murder weapon was ever found. However, Simpson hired an elite team of lawyers to defend him and they created enough doubt in the jury's mind to result in a not guilty verdict.
O.J. Simpson left court in October 1995, a free man.
Sometime in 1998, his estate was demolished and it is possible at that time a construction worker found a buried knife on the property. That worker gave the knife to a police officer he encountered on the street.
The officer took the knife home as a keepsake. The officer has not been identified to the media, but he has since retired. The knife came to police attention when he asked a friend to look up the record number for the case. The friend, who is a police officer, informed his superiors who then demanded the retired officer turn in the knife.
Investigators now have the knife and it has been revealed that they are running tests on it. They want to know if it has fingerprints and DNA that could link it to the case.
Even if the knife is found to be the murder weapon, prosecutors cannot retry the Simpson case, since it would amount to double jeopardy. However, knowing whether or not O.J. Simpson is truly guilty of the crime could bring some closure to surviving friends and family members of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman.
