St. Marie-Leonie Paradis

St. Marie-Léonie Paradis, also known as Mother Marie-Léonie, was a Canadian religious sister and founder of the Little Sisters of the Holy Family. She dedicated her life to serving the Church by supporting priests, seminarians, and the communities entrusted to their care.

Born Virginie-Alodie Paradis on May 12, 1840, in L'Acadie, Quebec, Canada, she grew up in a humble Catholic family. From an early age, she demonstrated a deep love for God and a desire to serve others. She received her education from the Sisters of Notre Dame before entering the Marianite Sisters of Holy Cross in 1854, at just 14 years old.

Taking the religious name Marie-Léonie, she devoted herself to teaching and charitable service. Her assignments brought her to Montreal, New York, and Indiana, where she gained valuable experience in education and religious community life.

In 1877, while serving at Memramcook, New Brunswick, Mother Marie-Léonie established a community of women dedicated to assisting priests and seminarians through prayer, hospitality, and practical service. This community eventually became the Little Sisters of the Holy Family, a congregation devoted to supporting the Church's pastoral mission.

Mother Marie-Léonie believed that humble acts of service, performed with love, were a powerful way to participate in Christ's work. She encouraged her sisters to approach their daily responsibilities with joy, generosity, and a spirit of prayer.

Despite challenges and hardships, she remained steadfast in her vocation, guiding her growing congregation with humility and unwavering trust in Divine Providence.

St. Marie-Léonie Paradis died on May 3, 1912, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, at the age of 71. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 11, 1984, and canonized by Pope Francis on October 20, 2024.

Her legacy continues through the Little Sisters of the Holy Family, whose dedication to serving priests and supporting the Church reflects her lifelong example of humility, charity, and faithful service to God.
