Maria Anna Sala (1829-1891) was the fifth of eight children from a very religious family. She was educated in the convent school by the Sisters of Saint Marcellina in Vimercate, Italy. She wanted to join the Sisters of Saint Marcellina, but Maria was needed back home. In 1848, she returned to the Sisters of Saint Marcellina, and became a nun in 1852. Over the next few decades she taught at the Marcellina schools within Italy.
