St. Cyprian

Saint Cyprian was born in Carthage into a wealthy pagan family. After his conversion to Christianity at the age of thirty-five, he was ordained a priest and soon chosen as Bishop of Carthage. During the persecutions under Emperors Decius and Valerian, he guided the Christian community through grave trials and worked to restore those who had renounced the faith under pressure.

Cyprian taught forcefully about the unity of the Church, founded on Peter, and about the common life of prayer. During a plague in North Africa, he urged Christians to assist the sick, including pagans. He was arrested and courageously suffered martyrdom in the persecution of Valerian. His pastoral writings and letters remain important witnesses to the life and faith of the early Church.
