Speciosus and his brother (Saint) Gregory, learned Roman noblemen, were both admitted by Saint Benedict into his monastery near Terracina, Italy. The two donated their vast wealth to the poor "as a ransom for their souls." One day, while Speciosus was away on a journey to Capua, his brother Gregory, sitting at table with the other monks, went into ecstasy. Afterwards he related that he had seen a vision of his brother's soul, miles away, leaving this world. Hurrying to Capua, Gregory learned that his brother had died at the very hour he had experienced the vision.
