Saint Cornelius was Pope of Rome from 251 to 253. He defended the Church’s teaching on reconciliation for Christians who had fallen during persecution and worked with Saint Cyprian of Carthage to preserve unity and sound discipline.

Cornelius was exiled to Centumcellae and died during the persecution. The Church honors him as a martyr who remained faithful to Christ and to the pastoral care of the Roman flock.
