Saint Symeon the New Theologian was a Byzantine monk and spiritual writer whose teaching emphasized the transforming presence of the Holy Spirit and the personal experience of divine grace. He entered monastic life young and was formed by a wise spiritual father.

Symeon taught that Christian prayer must lead to conversion of heart, humility, and love for Jesus Christ. His writings have had a lasting influence on Eastern Christian theology and spirituality.
